A Service of the Word – 8th November 2020

Preparation

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

and also with you.

This is the day that the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Prayers of Penitence

Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent. Have mercy on us according to your love. Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin. Renew a right spirit within us and restore to us the joy of your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May the Father of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.

Kyrie Eleison

Remember, Lord, your compassion and love, for they are everlasting.
Lord, have mercy.         Lord, have mercy.

Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions, but think on me in your goodness, O Lord, according to your steadfast love.

Christ, have mercy.      Christ, have mercy.

O keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame, for I have put my trust in you.

Lord, have mercy.     Lord, have mercy.

Venite                   cf Psalm 95

1             O come, let us sing to the Lord; ♦
let us heartily rejoice in the rock of our salvation.

2             Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving ♦
and be glad in him with psalms.

3             For the Lord is a great God ♦ and a great king above all gods.

4             In his hand are the depths of the earth ♦
and the heights of the mountains are his also.

5             The sea is his, for he made it, ♦
and his hands have moulded the dry land.

6             Come, let us worship and bow down ♦
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7             For he is our God; ♦ we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be. Amen.

Collect

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Psalm 91

1             Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High ♦
and abides under the shadow of the Almighty,

2             Shall say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my stronghold, ♦
my God, in whom I put my trust.’

3             For he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler ♦
and from the deadly pestilence.

4             He shall cover you with his wings and you shall be safe under his feathers; ♦ his faithfulness shall be your shield and buckler.

5             You shall not be afraid of any terror by night, ♦
nor of the arrow that flies by day;

6             Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, ♦
nor of the sickness that destroys at noonday.

7             Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, ♦ yet it shall not come near you.

8             Your eyes have only to behold ♦ to see the reward of the wicked.

9             Because you have made the Lord your refuge ♦
and the Most High your stronghold,

10           There shall no evil happen to you, ♦
neither shall any plague come near your tent.

11           For he shall give his angels charge over you, ♦
to keep you in all your ways.

12           They shall bear you in their hands, ♦
lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13           You shall tread upon the lion and adder; ♦
the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14           Because they have set their love upon me, therefore will I deliver them; ♦ I will lift them up, because they know my name.

15           They will call upon me and I will answer them; ♦ I am with them in trouble, I will deliver them and bring them to honour.

16           With long life will I satisfy them ♦ and show them my salvation.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading     Matthew 25.1-13

Jesus spoke this parable to the disciples: 1‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; 4but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. 6But at midnight there was a shout, “Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.” 7Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” 9But the wise replied, “No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.” 10And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. 11Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, “Lord, lord, open to us.” 12But he replied, “Truly I tell you, I do not know you.” 13Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.’

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers for 8th November 2020 – Linda Rudge

Almighty God our creator and our sustainer, help us to remember with humility and with a sense of the Truth. Give us strength to live by the example of Jesus Christ, your Son and our Redeemer. We ask for grace that we may always have hope – and the resilience to look forward into the coming of  your kingdom, as well as back to the times that have brought us here together; through Christ our Lord, Amen.   Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Lord, we give thanks for all our ministers here in the Land’s End Benefice over its long history, and for those now in our lives. We ask for strength and for understanding to minister with them in changing circumstances.  We remember the ways in which they have supported us and generations past, made us think, and made us smile. We remember those that are gone before us to your eternal Kingdom, and those that remain here in the local area, or who are away and yet always in our hearts.   Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Lord, we remember that it is easy to criticise, and hard to be kind when times are tough. Let us, through the example and presence of your patience and love, learn to be more understanding and not so quick to judge others.  Let us remember to be gentle to ourselves – we are your children, and your hope. May we remember especially at this time all our children, and those that care for them and learn with them to be true to you, and to their hearts.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Lord, we pray once more for peace in our world, and for the wisdom to remember that it has to grow from peace in every heart, and through loving actions in the world in which we live. We give thanks for all those who protect us, and who risk their lives for others every day. As we face increased physical isolation from others, we remember those who experience enforced lockdowns through imprisonment, through hostage taking and war, through slavery and through economic and social injustice.  We pray for inner strength and for outward calm as we face the unknown, but in the knowledge that you are there, and here, and everywhere.   Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Lord, we remember now all those known to us who are ill, or who are anxious and disturbed, and especially…..

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Lord, we give thanks for all those who have given their lives in the service of this country and we remember their sacrifice and those of their families. We remember people we have known and loved who have died, and who are now with you in heaven. We remember especially….

Autumn is leaving and winter approaches. We give you thanks for the cycle of the year, for the seasons and their blessings, and for the inspirational place where we live – we remember that for many, like those beside the waters of Babylon, home is a distant memory or an impossible dream. We have wept for them, and for ourselves, and we seek the comfort of your love. We remember.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Reflections

The reading today of the 10 bridesmaids is something that has a poignancy about it for Remembrance Day. Often, we have heard throughout the history of wars that those who were facing enemy fire that these men and women were not prepared, they did not have everything they needed to face the enemy, and were left struggling to cope. We hear of how major decisions are made without those making them having the full information about the situation and the challenges face. War is not easy to get right. In fact, I wonder if it can every be right!

In this parable Jesus is reminding people of the uncertainty of the world. Weddings took place when the groom turned up, at some time from dawn to dusk. The bridesmaids might be waiting to escort him (not the bride, like our weddings!) to his bride. Some of this group obviously thought that the groom would be kind to his bride and arrive in good time, while the others were somewhat less optimistic! And they were right, the groom arrived extremely late, half of the bridesmaids were ready to do their job, while others had not planned properly, ran out of oil and were left outside because once the wedding began no one was allowed to enter!

We like to plan, remember in March when everyone stockpiled toilet rolls? Or those picnics or holidays which seemed to include packing the kitchen sink? We want to be prepared for all comes our way.

2020 has taught us how silly it is to believe we can predict everything that may happen. I am sure if you knew in advance about lockdowns wouldn’t you really enjoy that last hug for a few months from your friends and family, or relish that last meal out?

I wonder what you wish you could have done to prepare for the March lockdown. This new lockdown will be different, new rules, greater risks, but one thing we can rely on in all this is the love of God to enfold us, the peace of God can be found if we look, and in looking and recognising that God is in the lockdown with us, then we can glow as lights of hope in our communities. Nothing, not even Covid can lock God out of your heart – unless you choose to reject him.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Christ our King make you faithful and strong to do his will, that you may reign with him in glory; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

Yours, Lord, is the kingdom: and you are exalted as head over all. Amen.
