Annual Service, Sat 2nd April, 4pm

Truro Guild Of Ringers Service

St Buryan Parish Church, Saturday 2nd April 2016

For bells are the voice of the church;

They have tones that touch and search

The hearts of young and old.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow  Bells of San Blas.

The art of change ringing is peculiar to the English, and, like most English

peculiarities, unintelligible to the rest of the world.

Dorothy L. Sayers              The Nine Tailors.

‘I ring out God’s love and lead the mighty five then rest with Solomon by my side.’

‘I give my voice to you: you give words to God.’

‘St Solomon pray for us’

‘Let my voice be the spur with which to praise God’

Inscriptions on our St Buryan Bells

Welcome                                         Rev’d Canon Vanda Perrett

We praise you Lord, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made. As we ring the peal, we co-ordinate our bodies and minds, keeping time and controlling the bells, and our concentration takes away our anxieties and worries. Lost in your mathematical wonders and the harmony of our bodies, we glorify you with enormous noise, you who did not despise the human body but glorified it with your own divine presence, and now reigns, one God, world without end. Amen.

Responses (Based on Psalm 98)

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,

burst into jubilant song with music;

make music to the Lord with the harp,

with the harp and sound of bells.

With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn,

shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

Let the rivers clap their hands,

let the mountains sing together for joy.

Let us all make a joyful noise unto the Lord

Hymn:  O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end

The Bell Ringers’ prayer:

Gracious Lord, source of all skill and beauty, who hast entrusted to us the ringing of thy bells, give unto us the needful skill and grace for the faithful performing of our art, that the sound of the bells may awaken in the hearts of all who hear them the desire to worship thee in spirit and in truth: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bless the Lord the God of our Fathers:

Ring his praise and exalt him forever.

Bless His holy and glorious name:

Ring his praise and exalt him forever.

Bless him on the throne of his kingdom:

Ring his praise and exalt him forever.

Bless him in the heights of heaven:

Ring his praise and exalt him forever.

Bless the Father Son and Holy Spirit:

Ring his praise and exalt him forever.

Reading: Numbers Chapter 10 verses 1-3

The Lord said to Moses:  “Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.  When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

Reading:  New Year’s Day Church Bells by Malcolm Guite

Not the bleak speak of mobile messages,

The soft chime of synthesised reminders,

Not texts, not pagers, data packages,

Not satnav or locators ever find us

As surely, soundly, deeply as these bells

That sound and find and call us all at once

‘Ears of my ears’ can hear, my body feels

This call to prayer that is itself a dance.

So ring  them out in joy and jubilation,

Sound them in sorrow tolling for the lost,

O let them wake the church and rouse the nation,.

A sleeping lion stirred to life at last

Begin again they sing, again begin,

A ring and rhythm answered from within.

The bells themselves are the best of preachers,

Their brazen lips are learned teachers,

From their pulpits of stone, in the upper air,

Sounding aloft, without crack or flaw,

Shriller than trumpets under the Law,

Now a sermon and now a prayer.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow       Christus the Golden Legend, Part III.

Bellringers Hymn                   Tune: Woodlands

Let bells peal forth the universal fame,
Creator Lord, of Thy mysterious name;
Conscience within, the boundless heavens above,
Disclose to faith the hidden name of Love.

Loudly proclaim with each insistent chime
How Thine eternity redeems our time;
Past sins forgiv’n, and future hopes restored,
Reveal Thy presence with us, gracious Lord.

Spirit divine, recast our faulty ways,
Make them ring true and echo to Thy praise;
Through every change of circumstance and choice
May we confess Thee with a single voice.

Call us to worship, call us to obey,
Call us to pilgrimage along life’s way;
Rouse us from sleep; renewed in mind and heart,
Call us to love Thee, Lord, since Love Thou art.

Peter R Baelz (1923-2001)

O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: be present with us now as we seek through our bell ringing to draw your people to praise you; and remind those who hear the bells of their need of you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, as we have rung these bells please be with all who heard them. May this reminder of your presence bring comfort to those who are sad, lonely or housebound; and challenge to those who are indifferent to your love and promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

A Prayer for Truro Guild of Ringers

O God who has made all things well and given us so much in life to enjoy. We thank you for the art of bell ringing, for the skill of bell founders and craftsmen, for the gift of music and sound, and for every means by which our life and worship are enriched. Bless the work of our guild and help us to be good stewards of your gifts, that we may glory you in fuller dedication of ourselves: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices....

Renewal of the Dedication of the Bells

In the faith of Christ, and for the benefit of his holy church, we rededicate our bells to the glory of God, that they may spread the message of our Creator’s joy in new creation, our Redeemer’s restoration of the lost and damaged, and our Sustainer’s help and guidance on our way. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dedication Prayer of the Bell Ringers

Almighty God, you have called us to be bell ringers in your Church: make us united and faithful in your service, so that our ringing of the bells may be done to your glory and for the benefit of all your people. As bell ringers, we dedicate our energy and skill to God’s glory, and determine that our ringing work will be our prayer. That is our resolve. Amen.

Dedication Prayer of the People

As a congregation, we dedicate ourselves to the glory of God, our lives ringing out in praise and calling all people to worship the One who rejoices in heaven at the joy of all believers. Amen.

Prosper with your blessing, O Lord, the work to which you have called us in your church, and strengthen the hands of all who serve you. Make our worship more worthy, our witness more effective, and inspire us with the fresh zeal in the furthering of your kingdom. Amen

Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage;

hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for evil;

strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak;

help the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord,

rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

I pray that the Lord will bless and protect you,

and that he will show you mercy and kindness.

May the Lord be good to you and give you peace.
